Van Persie haunts Arsenal as Man Utd go top - Reuters UK

LONDON | Sat Nov 3, 2012 5:01pm GMT

LONDON (Reuters) - Robin van Persie was on target against his old club as Manchester United brushed Arsenal aside for a 2-1 victory to leapfrog Chelsea at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

The prolific Dutchman, who joined United from Arsenal in August, needed less than three minutes to put the hosts ahead after a mistake by Thomas Vermaelen and Patrice Evra wrapped up a comfortable win with a 67th minute header.

Santi Cazorla netted in injury time for an otherwise disappointing Arsenal, who were reduced to 10 men after the break when recently returned midfielder Jack Wilshere was sent off for a second yellow card.

Victor Moses looked to have sent Chelsea back to the summit when he put them ahead on the hour at Swansea City in a later kickoff but Swansea earned a deserved 1-1 draw thanks to a late equaliser by Pablo Hernandez.

United, who ended Chelsea's unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a controversial 3-2 win last weekend, have 24 points from 10 games with Chelsea on 23.

Third-placed Manchester City, who have 21 points, conclude the day's action later at West Ham United (1730 GMT).

Everton moved into fourth place with 17 points despite conceding a last-gasp equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Fulham.

Tottenham Hotspur slipped out of the top four after a surprise 1-0 defeat at home by Wigan Athletic.

Norwich City beat Stoke City 1-0 while Aston Villa achieved only their second win of the season, 1-0 at Sunderland.
