Newcastle winger Obertan wants regular starting berth - Goal.com

Newcastle winger Gabriel Obertan has expressed his desire to become a first-team regular at St James' Park.

The Frenchman scored the only goal of the game on Thursday as his side overcame Club Brugge 1-0 in the Europa League.

And with Alan Pardew warning his preferred XI that he was impressed with the youthful squad that played in the European encounter, Obertan has stated his eagerness to break into the starting line-up.

"We don't get to play much in the Premier League," the 23-year-old told reporters.

"So we wanted to show the gaffer that we could have a starting position in the Premier League.

"I feel I've done pretty well in the Europa League and I'll wait for that position to come. I'm not going to give up. I trust myself."

Obertan also spoke of his joy at scoring his first goal at home for the Magpies, earning three vital points as they hope to progress to the next stage of the competition.

He added: "It was good - it was my first goal at St James' Park. It feels good for the confidence. For an offensive player like myself, it's just great."
