Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was scheduled to undergo a medical at Newcastle United on Monday before a £7m move from Montpellier. Yanga-Mbiwa could be joined at St James' Park by the Nancy left-back Massadio Haïdara.
Although late interest in Yanga-Mbiwa, a central defender, from Arsenal has made Newcastle officials nervous, they hope to complete the deal on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old, who has been capped three times by France, was born in the Central African Republic but brought up near Marseille. Alan Pardew also hopes to recruit Yoan Gouffran from Bordeaux. The 26-year-old forward who has scored 10 goals in 22 Ligue 1 games this season, is out of contract in the summer.
Newcastle had a £680,000 bid for him rejected by Bordeaux but are expected to return with an improved offer, nearer the £850,000 asking price. Pacy and two-footed, Gouffran's ability to play wide as well as filling an orthodox striker role appeals to Pardew.
A source at Nancy told Reuters that the 20-year-old Haïdara, a France Under-21 full-back, would have a medical on Tuesday and was expected to sign for around £3m.
Newcastle are considering signing the young England goalkeeper Jack Butland from Birmingham for £4m and immediately loaning him back to Lee Clark's team until the end of the season.
