Marseille president Vincent Labrune has indicated Newcastle will have to match his valuation to sign Loic Remy.
Newcastle are willing to pay 10million but Labrune wants around 15m.
The news from France emerges as manager Alan Pardew is becoming increasingly resigned to losing Demba Ba.
Target: Loic Remy looks set to join Newcastle in the January window
Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham could all invoke the 7.5million release clause in the striker's contract as talks over a new deal continue to stall.
Pardew hopes the Senegal striker, his top scorer with 11 goals this season, can still be persuaded to sign the contract which will finally get rid of the clause.
Pardew still hopes Remy will be competing for a place alongside Ba, not replacing him.
