Paris St-Germain ready to make fresh bid for Chelsea's Juan Mata - Telegraph.co.uk

Ba would appear surplus to requirements if a replacement can be found, although Mourinho vetoed the striker's move to Arsenal during the last transfer window. Chelsea have loaned Romelu Lukaku to Everton but there is no January recall clause in the deal.

Mourinho has to weigh up whether to recall David Luiz for the meeting with Manchester City on Sunday. The Brazil international was at fault last week for Cardiff City's goal in Chelsea's 4-1 victory, with the manager acknowledging that the player needs to mature.

"I think a team and the defensive players, they need stability and, with the talent he has, I hope he can reach that stability," Mourinho said.

"He did a mistake, he sometimes makes a little mistake. I think he has to work on that stability because it's important for him, it's important for the team.

"The team need him and he has the natural conditions to be a really top, top, top defender in the world of football. So he has to reach that stability, that maturity."

Mourinho continued his questioning of City's spending in the summer – although he backed down on his previous claim that the club are "economic sharks".

Nevertheless, Mourinho said that he hoped Uefa would scrutinise City's spending to ensure it complies with the Financial Fair Play rules.

"Of course, Chelsea want Uefa to rule the situation and to find if people are not doing it correctly," Mourinho said. "If we are working, thinking about the Financial Fair Play, I think the rules are there for everybody. I'm not saying City are not following the rules – I'm not there to control their numbers.

"I don't think FFP stops clubs investing in players. It stops a few things, but not that.

"Sharks is probably not the right word," the Portuguese said. "I think football needs investment and people who love the game to make smaller clubs bigger clubs."
