Mourinho does have cover in attack for Torres, with Demba Ba and Samuel Eto'o both fit.
But neither have scored in any competition so far this season.
Chelsea, having raided Belgian football for a host of young talent over the last three years, are now looking to France for possible recruits.
Two French youngsters, Marseille midfielder Gianelli Imbula, 21, and Porto centre-back Eliaquim Mangala, 22, are being watched by the club and moves could even be made as soon as January.
France Under-21 starlet Imbula, who is being targeted as a possible cheaper alternative to £40million Juventus player Paul Pogba, would cost about £25m.
He is a powerful and mobile holding midfielder whom the club see as a prospect for the future.
Chelsea are still in for former Manchester United star Pogba, but the asking price from Juventus is expected to be too high.
