Paul Lambert: Aston Villa can beat Arsenal - The Sun

PAUL LAMBERT refuses to accept that his kids are in for a horrible history lesson tonight.

Aston Villa have not beaten Arsenal at home for 14 years.

Worse still, last week's 5-0 thrashing at Manchester City put Villa in the drop zone for the first time since Gerrard Houllier's troubled reign.

But Lambo does not think he should write off tonight's clash and look ahead to more- winnable games against Reading, QPR and Stoke which are up next.

He said: "It's Arsenal but we're at home so we're going to go for it.

"We haven't beaten them here since 1998 so it just shows how hard it's going to be.

"I can't influence what's happened in years gone by but I can influence what goes on now."

Lambert was embarrassed to be fourth bottom last week, so he is mortified that Villa are now in the relegation zone.

He added: "I don't want to be anywhere near where we are now.

"Against Manchester United, in our last home game, the players showed their capability — the secret is sustaining that.

"We can't make it a one-game wonder.

"We need to win games including the Arsenal game.

"I'll never look at our fixtures and say 'we're playing Arsenal so I'll disregard three points there' — I know the consequences of losing, I'm not naive.

"You only have to look at what's happened to Roberto Di Matteo to see that it's getting ridiculous.

"But it's not something I'm ever frightened by and beating Arsenal would give these lads a massive lift."
