Mike Dean has been given Monday night's explosive Manchester derby in what will be his first run-in with Sir Alex Ferguson since the United boss spectacularly lost his cool on Boxing Day.

Ferguson defended his decision to give referee Dean a half-time blast of his hairdryer before Manchester United sealed another famous comeback win against Newcastle.

Dean also controversially sent off City captain Vincent Kompany in the defending Premier League champion's 2-0 victory over Arsenal on January 13 — a red card which left Roberto Mancini fuming and which was later rescinded by the FA.

Javier Hernandez's last-minute winner for United in that game at Old Trafford gave them a 4-3 triumph when they had been behind three times and took them seven points clear of rivals City at the time.

But Ferguson first rounded on Dean, then fourth official Neil Swarbrick before finally launching into assistant referee Jake Collin over Newcastle's second, an own-goal from Jonny Evans, which he was convinced should not have been allowed to stand.

Mancini was also furious with the official after his skipper Kompany was shown a straight red — and faced a three-match ban — for a lunge at Jack Wilshere.

While Mancini fumed: 'It's not a red card, it's nothing,' his captain graciously tweeted: 'No grudges against the referee, I understand the difficulty of the job.'

When City decided to appeal, it was widely anticipated it would fail, but a three-man FA commission ruled in their favour and referees were left bemused by the decision to overturn the red card.

Dean's assistant referee John Brooks is also the linesman who told City players to acknowledge their travelling fans who had paid 62 for a ticket after 900 supporters had stayed away from the Emirates in protest at the cost.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's game against Everton at White Hart Lane on Sunday will be refereed by Andre Marriner, the official who previously came into the north London club to teach the players how not to get booked for diving.

Laugh at United- you could win 10-0, still be hollow win as you wont win the PL

3-0..RVP to get a couple. The lads will up for this one, get a tenner on it.

Yesss, I was praying for FA to appoint Mike Dean.

Fergie doesnt like Mike Dean for a reason. He is not afraid to give decisions against United

Best referee in league by a country mile, obviously the Kompany sending off was wrong but other than that he's a top referee. Would be a lot more worried if it was Clattenburg or Webb.

Surely the FA checked it out and got SFA's approval before making the final decision.

Mike Dean will favour United in the hope that his beloved Spurs can pip City to second place.

Lets go for 8-1 this time lads.

DEAN NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE TROUBLE IS HE MAKES IT UP AS HE GOES ALONG,HIS REFERENCE WITH HIS LINESMAN IS NON EXISTENT, I,M IN CHARGE AND I,LL DO WHAT I WANT THIS IS THE TOP GAME OF THE SEASON WHY NOT USE THE TOP REFEREE OR ISTHAT TO DIFFICULT TO WORK OUT FOR MIKE RILEY

No doubt Fergie will be on the touchline intimidating the match officials; a tactic which has won 12 Premier League titles; heartily endorsed by the MU faithful but scorned by opposing supporters. This is why MU are less popular than John Giles Leeds Utd team of the early 1970's.
