Opposite number Malky Mackay, who was once again grateful to his goalkeeper for a string of world-class saves, said; "If you give a good team with good players time and space as we did in the first half, you will be punished. We did that and it gave us a lot to do in the second half.
"However, I thought our second half performance showed what Cardiff City is all about. We got a goal back and we pushed on and nearly did it," he said. "Jordon made a difference but everyone upped their game and the whole group were very, very good."
Marshall, who saved Cardiff from a thumping against Tottenham two weeks ago, was once again in sublime form during a first half that Newcastle dominated from start to finish. He denied Remy and Cisse from close range within the space of two minutes and thereafter, touched a Yohan Cabaye free kick on to the post.
However, the Scotland keeper, whose back four were less than protective on this occasion, was unable to keep out Rémy's 29th minute shot after the Frenchman had cut inside Kevin Theophile-Catherine and Steve Caulker on the edge of the home penalty area.
Nine minutes later, the 26-year-old was at it again. Cissé's shot was beaten away by Marshall at his near post, but Rémy, with ample time and space to compose himself, struck the ball into Marshall's unguarded net.
The freedom with which Newcastle played in the first half gave way to a slightly more testing second period as Cardiff began to close down the space and put their own possession to better use.
Substitute Jordon Mutch made a difference at the top of a five-man midfield and when he flicked on Aron Gunnarsson's delivery in the 59th minute, Odemwingie cut inside Davide Santon and beat the previously redundant Tim Krul.
It was a lifeline if nothing else and in the final quarter there were further chances for the hosts as Craig Bellamy provided greater width and Mutch pushed on to help Nicky Maynard.
Gunnarsson was inches away from converting Bellamy's cross shot 20 minutes from time and Mutch, faced with Krul, after Peter Whittingham's through ball, was denied a second goal in as many games when Krul plucked his lob from the sky.
Thereafter, Newcastle, who should have been awarded an 85th minute penalty when Andrew Taylor clearly handled a cross from Cisse, held on.
