Transfer deadline day: Manchester United and Arsenal poised to break all ... - Telegraph.co.uk

Having failed to make a significant addition to his squad at Old Trafford since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as manager in May this year, Moyes could also be busy on Monday, spending more than £80 million before the deadline falls – if bids for Everton's Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, plus moves for Roma's experienced Italian international Daniele De Rossi and Athletic Bilbao's 24-year-old Ander Herrera succeed.

With panic setting in among Premier League managers, however, the spending is expected to continue right up until the deadline with clubs desperate to take their last chance to boost player numbers before the window reopens on Jan 1.

Having been criticised by leading figures such as Uefa president Michel Platini and a host of top-flight managers, this could be the last summer window to remain open beyond the start of the season.

Complaints at the window being too long and that it distorts the valuation of players have been voiced, with concerns that the uncertainty also places undue pressure on managers.

However, all thoughts of the rights and wrongs are likely to be put aside until 11pm on Monday night with managers up and down the country flicking through their contacts book in a final desperate attempt to sign the player capable of making the difference between success and failure.
