Chelsea's Willian offers little to justify £32m scramble for his signature - Telegraph.co.uk

Willian just could not get into the game.

He started on the right of a five-man midfield and won a corner with an early cross, but within 10 minutes of the start had swapped places with Hazard on the left flank in search of better luck.

None came. He hardly had a sniff of the ball as Oscar took over as creative director, and it was no surprise that the latter should open the scoring on the stroke of half-time.

Willian started the second half back on the right, and got in another dangerous cross that was seen off by Basle's keeper Yann Sommer. But Oscar continued to catch the eye, hitting the bar with a long-range shot and seeing another deflected wide.

And just as he finally got his engine running, going past two defenders before being hauled down, a challenge which earned his marker Marcelo Diaz a yellow card, Willian was taken off by Jose Mourinho. He walked off to loud cheers of approval, milking the applause, unaware that Chelsea's fans were simply delighted to see Mata introduced to the fray.

Ultimately, though, the changes did not work out for Mourinho as Basle scored twice in a 10-minute spell to turn the game on its head.

Willian had an evening to remember here at Stamford Bridge for Shakhtar Donetsk last November, but this time it was not his night.

No yolk for Mourinho as his 'beautiful eggs' fail to hatch ...

Good egg
Oscar was the best of the batch, scoring the openerl and at the heart of Chelsea's best football.

Sunny side up
Juan Mata had a huge smile when he warmed up to loud applause, and got a great reception when he came on.

Scrambled egg
Gary Cahill was all over the shop at times, failing to make a decisive interception when Salah equalised.

Bad egg
Willian had a debut to forget – not exactly a stinker but there was certainly a whiff of rotten egg.
