Marouane Fellaini will not improve Manchester United, blasts Howard Kendall - Daily Star

"Moyes wanted him and got him but I don't think he'll improve Manchester United"

Kendall predicted years ago that Moyes would succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at United but he was disappointed with the manner of his departure.

"He had 11 years at Everton and while he didn't leave them with a bad team, he left them with nothing in terms of his contract," said Kendall.

"Maybe, when his contract was running down, he could have signed for another 12 months with a buy-out clause.

"That buy-out clause, which United would have had to meet, would then have been a tribute to Everton Football Club.

"Evertonians wanted Liverpool to win against Manchester United last Sunday – that's a first. I can't remember that happening before.

"And that's because they were disappointed at the way Moyes left the club. I know how they feel, because I mix with them and I speak at dinners which they attend and they tell me what they think.

"I always felt that Alex wanted David to succeed him. And it's not a feeling I had in just the last 12 months – it's one I had for four or five years.

"It wasn't something I feared would happen – I just viewed it as a certainty.

"It was all down to the relationship between two Scots – two top-class managers.

"Look at all the deals between the clubs when Alex was at Old Trafford and David was at Everton – deals such as the Wayne Rooney transfer, Tim Howard, Phil Neville and of course, Darron Gibson.

"It wasn't a question of if Moyes would go to United, it was a question of when."

Kendall, though, still doesn't think Moyes will mark his first season at United by retaining the Premier League title.

And the man who twice won the league title with Everton as a manager and once as a player, said: "I wouldn't like to bet on who will win the title but I don't think it will be Manchester United.

"It's all about the players eventually and signing the right ones."

Kendall, meanwhile, is very optimistic about the future of his beloved Everton.

He said: "I like Roberto Martinez – and I'm pleased with his appointment.

"A new manager has got to win over the players. Then he's got to get results to win over the fans.

"I'm sure that Roberto will make the right moves to take Everton forward.

"They did well sgning Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea on loan right at the death in the transfer window.

"I'm sure the reason he signed for Everton was because he is going to play this season as the centre-forward."
