SHOLA AMEOBI dreams of 'doing a Chelsea' as he prepares to create his own slice of Toon history.
The Newcastle striker could make his 50th European appearance for his boyhood club against Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League last-16 second leg tomorrow night.
That would see him overtake Toon legend Alan Shearer's mark and move him just 12 appearances behind Shay Given's all-time Euro games record.
But Ameobi is more concerned about finishing the job against mega-rich Anzhi after their goalless draw in Moscow.
And he reckons Newcastle can be inspired by Chelsea's shock Champions League win last term and go all the way in the Europa League.
Ameobi, 31, said: "It's remarkable really because I didn't know I have now played 49 games in Europe. I was shocked.
"I'm a lucky boy. Every time I have put on the Newcastle shirt I have added myself to the history of the club and that means so much to me.
"I'm flying the flag for Newcastle and that is so important to me. Now I just want to get us into the last eight, where anything is possible.
"As we have seen in Europe in the last few seasons, especially with Chelsea last year, if you put yourself in the mix towards the end of a tournament anything can happen, so I'm very excited.
"We are very determined to put our best foot forward and get through against Anzhi."
Magpies boss Alan Pardew has called on the home fans to create an atmosphere to remember at St James' Park tomorrow.
And Ameobi agrees the Toon Army can help lead Newcastle to a famous win over Guus Hiddink's Russians.
The Geordie said: "European nights are always special for Newcastle and it doesn't matter who we are playing against they are great occasions.
"I've enjoyed some memorable games in Europe with the club and I hope we have another one on Thursday.
"We desperately want to make the quarter-finals and keep progressing.
"We came away from Anzhi with a decent result and something we can take home to St James' Park in the second leg and build on.
"At home we have to get back to where we were last year and make St James' Park a fortress.
"We have done that pretty well in Europe this season and with a big crowd behind us I know we can get through."
Stand-in skipper Yohan Cabaye also wants Toon supporters to roar the side on to glory in what will be one of the biggest cup nights on Tyneside in years.
The French maestro added: "We will be positive and we have confidence too. We will have the backing of our fans that is important to us.
"We know there will be a big crowd at St James' Park. We want to do well for them, and reach the quarter-finals.
"That is our aim, and we will do everything to achieve this ? we want to stay in this competition."
