EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea set August 26 date for sealing Wayne Rooney deal - Express.co.uk

He said: "We will all be glad once the season is started. If we get the games going, the focus will hopefully shift from the off-field stuff we have at the moment."

United have repeatedly insisted Rooney, 27, is not for sale at any price, and they cannot contemplate a deal if they have not brought in top-drawer replacements.

Moyes had an offer for Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas rejected but may go back in for the Spaniard this week.

Real Madrid's Luka Modric is also on the radar, but Moyes was been warned that Marouane Fellaini will not be available for less than £23.5m despite a buy-out clause for that amount in the Everton midfielder's contract having expired.

Moyes is interested in linking up with his former player, but United, and other suitors such as Arsenal, have bided their time as they do not value the Belgium international at the price outlined in his deal and feel he is worth nearer £18m.
