FA chairman Greg Dyke risks Premier League ire by backing winter World Cup - Telegraph.co.uk

"I understand the reaction of the Premier League to not want to move it. I have some sympathy with them. They didn't have to choose to give it to Qatar in the summer but that's where it is. It will either have to be moved out of the summer or to another location. I suspect the former is more likely than the latter."

A winter World Cup would be better for England as the players are often exhausted by the summer - assuming they qualify.

Dyke believes England will reach next summer's World Cup despite Roy Hodgson's team sitting second in qualifying Group H with an awkward trip pending to Ukraine next month.

"Roy lives up the road from me [in London] so we went and had an evening's drinking in Richmond, talking about the future, the importance of this year,'' added Dyke.

"We are all pretty optimistic that we are going to get to Brazil. Some people think it might be via the play-offs, I'm not so sure, I think we might get straight there. Roy is certainly confident. Brazil will be a great place to go. It should be exciting."

Dyke also wants more continuity between the England age-groups. "We went into a couple of tournaments in the summer where we didn't do too well, particularly the Under-21s.

"I spoke with Alex [general secretary Horne] and the football structure needs to be more joined up right the way from young kids through.

"We need to make it very clear which tournaments we are going to take very seriously. In the summer I didn't think we made that clear and that was a mistake.''

Newly started at the FA, Dyke has positive early impressions.

"From the outside the image of the FA is a bit crusty, old and 'blazers' but that's not the staff that I've found. I've found St George's Park is as exciting as is Wembley."
