A win at home to Braga on Tuesday would surely ensure there will no repeat of the disappointment of last season in which the three-time champions failed to negotiate their group.
Sir Alex Ferguson appears confident that will not happen again and has already declared that Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra will be rested for this one.
Braga will have to cause an upset to deny them victory but it's worth noting that Basel and Benfica both picked up draws at Old Trafford at this stage last season.

In the goalscorer markets, after failing to find the net in the opening six games of the season, Wayne Rooney has now scored five goals in three games for club and country – he's 15/4 (4.75) to score first here.
