They managed just two clear efforts on goal all afternoon and ended the afternoon with £12m defender Christopher Samba playing up front.
United went ahead in the 23rd minute with a wonderful strike from full-back Rafael, who volleyed home after Julio Cesar's pushed a Van Persie cross out of the penalty area.
His save did not deserve the strike that screamed into the top right-hand corner of his net.
Rafael turned saviour on 35 minutes, clearing on the line from Samba's header.
Cesar prevented his side falling further behind moment later, saving smartly from a Van Persie flick.
Rangers showed a little more purpose in the second half and substitute Loic Remy drew a smart save from the underworked David De Gea, who parried out the Frenchman's drive.
The chance was a warning blast to United and they responded with a goal from the remarkable Giggs, who turns 40 this year but has lost none of his appetite for the game.
Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck combined and when Nani slipped a pass inside full-back Jose Bosingwa Giggs's run beat the offside flag. His finish across Cesar decided the game and, perhaps, the title race.
