Lampard will probably still be allowed to leave at the end of this season, with LA Galaxy increasingly confident that he will join the MLS as David Beckham's replacement. Crucially Lampard, 34, is two years older than Cole.
Lampard had hoped to secure his future with the club by now but he was told before Christmas that his only chance of a new deal was to wait until the end of this season. Chelsea told Lampard he could leave in January if he so wished – or see out his present deal.
Chelsea's captain, John Terry, has one more year on his contract after this season. He has also been pushing the club for a new deal but, interestingly, he too has been informed that he will have to wait until the summer at the earliest to open negotiations.
