They must be an incredibly frustrating team to support, especially if you've grown up in the Wenger era, in which he has transformed them from a frequently risible outfit with spurts of glory to a team that consistently performs well but can't ever seem to go that extra metaphorical yard.
It's back to the comforting surroundings and anthems of the Champions League tonight, where Wenger has presided over an impressive but unspectacular record of always qualifying, almost always getting out of their group, then losing to a team that maddening step above them on football's pecking order.
They've not lost at home to a foreign team for nine years, and Schalke, who could only manage a draw at home to Montpellier last time out, are unlikely to break that record.
Still, all feels a bit pointless, doesn't it?
