From chosen one to frozen Juan... Mata's fall from grace is a mystery - Daily Mail

By Matt Barlow

It has become the riddle of the summer. How on earth did Juan Mata slide from being Chelsea's player of the year to the fringe of the team?

Supporters are certainly baffled, as are rival managers who made enquiries about signing the 25-year-old after he was left out of the team at Manchester United on Monday.

Tottenham were quick to let it be known they were interested and Arsene Wenger went as far as to admit Mata 'could be on the market'.

Chelsea and Jose Mourinho deny they want to sell and Mata does not want to leave but he is intelligent and mature enough to work it out for himself.

He is not someone prone to tantrums or to demand showdown talks and accepts that he missed early pre-season and Chelsea's tour of Asia after international duty at the Confederations Cup.

He also realises there has been managerial change and he will need time to understand what Mourinho expects of him.

Barring an unforeseen chain of events, Mata will not leave Stamford Bridge before Monday's deadline but he will reassess his position in January.

Mourinho wants to play high-tempo and intense football and this includes a tireless work ethic from the four most advanced players in his 4-2-3-1 formation.

It is the reason behind his pursuit of Wayne Rooney and his decision to move for Samuel Eto'o, who performed such a role for him at Inter.

Willian, who completed his move to Chelsea on Wednesday after acquiring a work permit, may not be combative like Rooney but he is quick and willing to close down spaces.

Mata, it must be said, does not do this. In fact, he rarely contributes off the ball.

After hijacking Willian's transfer to Tottenham last week, Mourinho rejected the idea he wanted Mata out and stressed he would need many quality players for these positions to achieve what he was after.

This week, however, Chelsea were in talks for yet another winger: Christian Atsu, a 21-year-old Ghanaian international from Porto.

Mata appears to be staring at the prospect of being the new Joe Cole, gifted footballer and darling of the fans but under-appreciated by Mourinho and certainly not central to his plans.

One significant difference is that Roman Abramovich adores Mata as one of the few recruitment successes of the post-Mourinho era and one of the creative forces who brought attractive football to Stamford Bridge.

Wenger, having been so close to signing Mata when he left Valencia in 2011, will monitor the situation closely and has asked to be kept update on any developments.

Mata's father (also his agent) was spotted at the Emirates as Arsenal beat Fenerbahce in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Villas-Boas, the Chelsea manager responsible for identifying Mata, is also keen but on Wednesday rejected the idea that Mourinho would sell an influential player to a fierce rival like Tottenham.

'Mata is a great, great player and very, very important for Chelsea,' said the Spurs boss. 'They are not just going to strengthen another team who they think are rivals for the title.'

Work ethic: Mourinho will want Mata, challenging Christian Benteke, to add a defensive element to his game

The idea that Mata may be available to teams outside England is supported by reports in Spain this week that he was offered to Atletico Madrid.

One outcome which may appeal to Mourinho (if not Chelsea fans) would be to swap Mata for Rooney, but Chelsea appear to have accepted defeat on Rooney.

And so it remains a riddle.

He's too much of an attack-minded player Moribundho.

Oh dear. Matt Barlow. Enough said.

This is so funny. Last season every shock horror story featured how on earth Chelsea under Benitez could field a side without starting Lampard. Now he is playing surprise, surprise the focus is now on Mata. After only 3 games! Mata has played non-stop football for almost 2 years, and missed much of the pre-season. It would have been a risk to have played him against Utd when clearly Mourinho was thinking midfield=workmanlike. Why invent a crisis from a standard use of a talented squad?

Please do not trade Mata he is one of the best players chelsea has had it has been a good combination with the other players - I think the rest of Chelsea fans agree

Do these 'journalists' really believe that we think what they have written is factual as it is all utter tripe. Mata has been injured so this is a pointless article, as was the one where suarez was looking unhappy when in reality he spent training grinning and laughing, the countless occassions of teams 'missing' out on targets when the mail had made the rumour up or copied it off a dogy twitter page, bale turning up at 'spanish' hotels that happen to be flying the welsh dragon on the mast outside etc etc etc, all rubbish.

Cracking little player.Would love to see him at Old Trafford.

I don't understand what all the hype is about ? Mata missed half of preseason and then was injured for the start of it. He played against villa and wasn't necessary against united because of tactics. Chill the hell out you silly writers your just looking to stoke a fire that isn't there. The other players have been playing and playing well, mata has to earn his spot. Get half a football mind. He is and was one of our best players last season but were on top of the league so what's the problem? It's the beauty of having a squad that finally has depth ! We will be playing over 60 games again this season. Everyone will have eir chance. Pft. 3 games in and it's the end of the world. Talk about total hype!

Should Mata start in the Super Cup and play every game after that if fit I guess the DM will be tending an apology to Jose and Mata for the continuous hounding and nonsensical myths being spouted?

high tempo i think not...haven't played an exciting game yet..lucky to get a point at manchester and should have only had one against villa...might not lose but boring boring boring football

It's Mourinho's retribution after spending three miserable years in Spain, he hates everything that is Spainish. Chelsea's Spanish players, you can kiss goodbye to your careers.

Champions League draw: Arsenal drawn in 'group of death' against Marseille ... - The Independent

It was a nightmare draw for Arsene Wenger's side which saw them grouped with Marseille, last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund and big spending Italian side Napoli.

Arsenal have a tremendous record in recent years of advancing from the group stage, but the task this season will be particularly difficult, despite being among the top seeds.

Elsewhere, Manchester City, who were among the third seeds, had been fearing their own 'group of death'. While they will have to play holders Bayern Munich, they may feelthey've got off lightly with the other sides in their group CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen.

David Moyes' first foray into Champions League football with Manchester United will see his side take on Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Sociedad.

Chelsea have probably the easiest draw of the Premier League teams. They will play Schalke, FC Basel and Steaua Bucharest.

For Scottish champions Celtic - they will face another daunting trip to Barcelona, as they did last season, as well as incredibly tough ties against AC Milan and Ajax.

Arsenal handed tough Champions League group while Man City face Bayern ... - Mirror.co.uk

Arsenal and Manchester City were handed tough Champions League tasks after the draw for the group stage was made in Monaco.

The Gunners were pitted together with last year's beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund, Marseille and Napoli in Group F.

Manchester City also face a tall order if they are to reach the knockout phase for the first time after being drawn with holders Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen in Group D.

Chelsea, who won the competition in 2012, appear to have an easier draw after they were put in Group E alongside Schalke, Basel and Steaua Bucharest.

Manchester United have a long trip to Shakhtar Donetsk and also face German and Spanish opposition in the form of Bayer Leverkusen, Real Sociedad in Group A.

Celtic have possibly the hardest task of all the British teams though after being drawn alongside three former winners Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax. Neil Lennon will be hoping his charges will be able to repeat their heroics against the Catalan side last year, when they beat Barca 2-1 at Celtic Park.

See how all the action unfolded in our live blog here.

Samuel Eto'o: Chelsea sign Cameroon striker from Anzhi - BBC Sport

Chelsea have signed Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o on a free transfer from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

The 32-year-old joins the Premier League team on a one-year-deal.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was Eto'o's boss at Inter Milan when they won the Champions League in 2010.

Eto'o's club honours

Real Mallorca (1999-2004): Copa del Rey (2003). Scored 69 goals in 165 appearances.

Barcelona (2004-2009): Champions League (2006, 2009); La Liga (2005, 2006, 2009); Copa del Rey (2009); Spanish Super Cup (2006, 2007). Scored 129 goals in 201 appearances.

Inter Milan (2009-2011): Champions League (2010); Serie A (2009); Coppa Italia (2010, 2011), Italian Super Cup (2010); Fifa World Club Cup (2010). Scored 53 goals in 101 appearances.

Anzhi Makhachkala (2011-2013): Scored 36 goals in 71 appearances.

"It wasn't a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it," Eto'o said.

"I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible."

Mourinho moved for Eto'o after two Chelsea bids for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney were rejected.

Earlier this week, it emerged Rooney was not prepared to force a move by handing in a formal transfer request, effectively ending the Blues's hopes of signing the England striker.

Four-time African Footballer of the Year Eto'o was a key part of Mourinho's Champions League-winning Inter side, and became the highest-paid player in the world when he moved to Anzhi in 2011.

The Russian club have also sold Brazil attacking midfielder Willian, 25, to Chelsea after their billionaire owner Suleyman Kerimov decided to significantly reduce the club's budget.

Eto'o started his career at Real Madrid but was loaned out to Leganes and Real Mallorca before making a permanent move to Mallorca in 1999.

The striker, part of the Cameroon team that lifted the African Nations Cup in 2002, won the Copa del Rey before joining Barcelona in 2004 .

During his time at the Nou Camp, he won the Champions League twice - in 2006 and 2009 - scoring in both finals, as well as winning the Spanish league three times.

In 2009, Barcelona paid Inter Milan £40m plus Eto'o for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the striker went on to win the Champions League again in his first season under Mourinho at the San Siro.

He joined Anzhi, where he reportedly earned £167,825 a week, in 2011.

Galactico pair snub Arsenal: Di Maria and Ozil determined to fight for places - Daily Mail

By Matt Barlow

|

Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria have dashed the hopes of Arsenal and Manchester United by vowing to stay at Real Madrid and fight for their places, despite the imminent arrival of Gareth Bale.

Ozil and Di Maria are aware their positions in Carlo Ancelotti's team are the most under threat from Bale.

Yet they are both determined not to be forced out of Real in order to help the club recover some of their world-record outlay.

Not tempted: Mesut Ozil will again resist the chance to move to the Premier League

Not tempted: Mesut Ozil will again resist the chance to move to the Premier League

'I am not afraid of this deal,' said Ozil on Wednesday, when asked about Bale at an event to mark his new boot deal with adidas. 'I am happy to play with the best players in the world and I am sure I can manage this new situation in the team.'

Manchester United, who tried to sign him in 2010, and Arsenal are both interested in the 24-year-old Germany playmaker, who would demand a salary of nearly 200,000 a week to better his deal in Spain.

'I will stay,' said Ozil. 'I am happy to be at Real Madrid and proud to be part of this team. It is an honour and a privilege. I have a contract until 2016. I am flattered that great teams are interested in me but I have a contract at Real Madrid and I will stay. There is no discussion.'

Staying put: Angel Di Maria is also determined to remain at The Bernabeu

Staying put: Angel Di Maria is also determined to remain at The Bernabeu

Di Maria has also made it clear he does not intend to leave and has impressed Ancelotti with his attitude and work ethic since it became clear Real were going to sign Bale for a world-record transfer fee of 86million.

The 25-year-old Argentina winger impressed during the 1-0 win at Granada on Monday, when his run and cross helped to set up the winning goal for Karim Benzema. Di Maria is clearly determined to make it difficult for Ancelotti to drop him and the manager has since admitted he would not want to see him leave — although  Arsenal, Manchester City and PSG have all shown an interest.

'I understand the club are strengthening and they are precise in what they do,' Di Maria told newspaper AS. 'But I signed a contract until 2018 just a year ago and my desire is to stay in the Bernabeu.'

Focused on Real: Karim Benzema is another who will reject the chance to move to the Premier League

Focused on Real: Karim Benzema is another who will reject the chance to move to the Premier League

It is an emphatic pledge from both players. Benzema has also reacted to interest from Arsenal by insisting he will not leave Madrid.

The France striker has the advantage of being a favourite of president Florentino Perez and Zinedine Zidane, an assistant to Ancelotti and adviser to Perez, although it remains to be seen how the club will deal with a surplus of attacking options.

Bale will compete with Di Maria to play on the opposite flank to Cristiano Ronaldo — or with Isco and Ozil to play in the hole behind the centre forward.

Spoilt for choice: And Carlo Ancelotti expects to be joined by Gareth Bale (right)

Despite Di Maria's attitude, he does not have the marketing potential of the true Galacticos. Ozil's case was not helped when he stormed down the tunnel after being substituted by Ancelotti on Monday.

Ultimately it may depend on the pressure Real feel to raise more money from sales — in which case they may encourage the players to leave, as they did with Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben in 2009.

The comments below have not been moderated.

There is no way both Ozil and Di Maria can stay at Real Madrid. Surely one of them has to go because there will be too much competition at the club for one or two positions. Arsenal should push for Di Maria as Ozil will be off limits I think.

Headline says 'snub Arsenal' and yet the article admits that they also turned down Man U. Yet another example of the DM trying to damage the image of Arsenal and present them as the team no-one wants to go to. Man U are the current champions- surely it's a bigger story that even they couldn't tempt them?

And now he is off to Galatasary... Says it all: An angel would rather go to HELL than Arsenal!

Why would anyone want to go to arsenal when their only ambition is to finish above spurs!!!!

They'll stay as long as they're kept

If players at a club started to talk about leaving a club just as soon as they hear of interest elsewhere we would be slating them for disloyalty but here the media slate Arsenal - its delirious and laughable. Have real madrid accepted a bid from Arsenal only for the player to turn round and refuse to go there? NO so how can these fools claim they are snubbing Arsenal. Dont buy into this drivel and poor sports journalism writing fillers in between a few hours nap? Please give us some real and original stories and dont jump off the bridge with the rest. Have RM accepted a bid for Arsenal? yes, Higuain.

Whilst on the other side of north London......... COYS!!

I have a bad feeling flamini is going to be it for us

Arsene - let's face it there must be a conspiracy theory that none wants to join you !! You need help so let's get David Dein back. Please

What a joke Arsenals transfer dealings, or lack of them, have become. Numerous clubs are bringing quality players in but Arsenal consistently fail. Will we have the Wenger panic signings on deadline day??

I've told Cabaye to play, says Newcastle boss Pardew with Arsenal target keen ... - Daily Mail

By Colin Young

|

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has told Yohan Cabaye to play against Fulham on Saturday.

And Pardew is hopeful the France international midfielder, who has now missed three games after going on strike, will be available for weekend selection.

Cabaye has refused to play for his club since they turned down a 10million offer from Arsenal in the opening week of the season.

Wantaway: Yohan Cabaye is refusing to play for Newcastle with interest coming in from Arsenal and PSG

Wantaway: Yohan Cabaye is refusing to play for Newcastle with interest coming in from Arsenal and PSG

Newcastle want at least 20million for a player they signed from Lille for a quarter of that amount two years ago and Pardew is eager to welcome him back into the squad if Arsene Wenger refuses to meet the asking price between now and Monday's transfer window closure.

That will begin with a start against Martin Jol's Fulham at St James' Park on Saturday.

Pardew said: 'We've still got to wait until the window shuts before we can say yes or nay on a definite, but what I have said to Yohan Cabye is that I expect him to play this weekend and until another bid comes in from Arsenal that is accepted or not, that will be the situation.

'I think he may play, but we'll have to wait and see over the next couple of days how that manifests itself.

'We're all conscious that it's about the football club and it's the football club that's important. We have to protect the football club and as managers and chairmen and boards a lot of that has gone on this summer, making sure that agents aren't dictating the situation. It's more the agent than the player, in my opinion.

'I hope I can keep all my players, because you don't want to lose a world class player like Yohan Cabaye and hopefully the addition of one or two others.

Yohan Cabaye

Signed, sealed, delivered: Has Cabaye played his last game for Newcastle?

Plenty to ponder: Alan Pardew

Plenty to ponder: Alan Pardew

'We need and would like another striker, or maybe another two flair players in the side, so we are in the market for anybody in that field that we think is going to work for us. We work in a small spectrum of the market in terms of the finance we have available, so that's what we're concentrating on.'

Newcastle's summer signing Loic Remy is finally ready to be unleashed at the weekend and the on-loan QPR striker will be on the bench to face Fulham.

The France international arrived injured but has now shaken off the calf problem which forced him to miss pre-season.

Pardew added: 'He's trained, but he hasn't really done a pre-season. I think the option of him on the bench, maybe for just the real last period of the game might be something I like because it would be nice to bring him off the bench.

'He's fit and well, there's no problem with him, it's just he can't really do a big portion of the game.

'I hope our fans don't start chanting his name after 20 minutes! They're a bit like that our fans, a bit impatient for things like that, but I hope we can just give them another victory. They were absolutely brilliant at Morecambe and I hope we can give them another win on Saturday and give them a lift, too.'

over rated coward of a playet

As an arsenal fan, cabaye is being silly. Lets get real if Arsene Wenger wanted you that badly he would have tried harder. Wenger is so indecisive when it comes to transfers especially well known players. The media will throw a name he entertain the idea in his own way but then offer less than the usual price. And then go buy a player we never heard of just to show everyone he is different. Cabaye your at a club that support you....be a man and show your loyalty and profession. If Arsenal offer correct money and if everyone's happy great we get a good player, Newcastle get money....simples

I'm an Arsenal fan and I feel sorry for Newcastle, Wenger needs to either pay what they are asking (or closer to it i.e. 15m+) or move on and let Newcastle get him back in the team. This is not a good way to conduct business.

Arsenal should either pay the 15 million or state clearly their interest in the player is over. It is not fair to the Newcastle faithful or the club.

I have told cabaye to play but the bit he missed out was he said your not the boss of this club so no it would be funny if it wasnt so tragic

In any other business in the world how can you expect to be successfull when the 2 people in charge the general manager and deputy manager are 2 clowns like pardew and kinnear... I wouldnt trust them to run a cornershop never mind newcastle united .. Ah well ITS NOT WHAT YOU KNOW ITS WHO YOU KNOW !!!!

Lee, Tottenham - ever heard of someone saying something in jest? They had just secured survival.

Do it! ASAP.

This guy better start playing for Newcastle and seriously mean it. Arsenal is an unserious team.

This lad deserves the heaviest fine ! Arsenal don't want such a player fool .

Morecambe 0 Newcastle United 2: match report - Telegraph.co.uk

"I thought Sammy gave a really good account of himself as well. He's starting to put it all together now and knock on the first-team door.

"It's a nice moment for the Ameobi family to see both boys on the scoresheet. This result takes the pressure off a bit and it will give everybody at the club a lift."

Pardew had argued before travelling to Lancashire that all the players in his squad should be strong enough to come into the side and be good enough to beat a team three divisions below them.

He was right, but it is always a risk to make eight changes to a starting line-up, as has so often been seen in the recent history of the League Cup – a competition revitalised by its propensity to shock.

Morecambe were by far the better of the two teams in the first period and should have gone in at half-time in front.

Their chief threat early on came from set pieces, but they also opened up the visitors in open play as the game wore on.

Twice Newcastle cleared headers off the line, with Morecambe claiming the second was handled by Dan Gosling although replays showed it had been his chest.

Andy Fleming tested Rob Elliot from distance early on.

That was a routine save for the Newcastle goalkeeper but he was called upon to make two impressive ones before the break when Padraig Amond was able to get in behind the defence.

On the first occasion, Elliot tipped a rising shot over the bar, on the second he got down sharply to a low strike from close range.

Newcastle's best chance was a header from Yoan Gouffran which went wide and a free-kick from the otherwise anonymous Gael Bigirimana, which Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche tipped over.

On came Shola Ameobi for the Magpies but the veteran striker missed a wonderful chance within minutes when he sliced a shot high and wide when clean through.

Newcastle were much improved, though, dominating possession after a half-time rollicking.

It felt like a goal was coming. Paul Dummett went close with a ferocious 25-yard drive as Morecambe found it hard to relieve the pressure.

Eventually it came when Shola Ameobi's shot took a deflection, wrong-footed Roche and broke Morecambe hearts.

Sammy Ameobi then broke free to seal the tie in stoppage time.

Morecombe manager Jim Bentley said: "This competition has received a bit of a boost with recent results.

"The top teams rotate their squads, Newcastle did and we had a real good go.

"We were the better team in the first half but we needed to score when we were on top.

"That would have made them nervous and maybe got their fans on their back, but it wasn't to be.

"I'm proud of the team, though, because we worried them and they had to bring on some of their best players to get the job done."
